Ludicrous softcore silliness from schlock writer / director Bethel Buckalew, who combines copious simulated sex with a pointless and plodding boxing themed plot. His story has dim-witted boxer Johnny (Steve Hodge) being exploited and abused by his nasty, misogynistic manager Sammy Beal (John Tull), who, in turn, is being hassled by powerful, sleazy mob boss Louie (Fred Finkleloffe). When Johnny falls for Sammy’s “friend” Lisa (Mirka Madnadrazsky) things take a decidedly violent and deadly turn. The plot is silly and risible but ends on a surprising downbeat and nihilistic note. The runtime is extended by Buckalew by padding it out with plenty of gratuitous nudity and the occasionally interesting but mostly nondescript soft-core sex. The best of these comes at the beginning and features the great Uschi Digard in her buxom, steamy prime engaging in a poolside romp. Rene Bond also appears as a hooker who gets abused by Sammy and Mirka Madnadrazsky makes for a fine, leggy, statuesque presence. Also of note is George “Buck” Flower who puts in a semi-comedic turn as Johnny’s trainer and gone-to-seed, ex-pro Benny. “Below the Belt” is tortuous rubbish, but any movie that features the great Uschi Digard can’t be all bad.
