Tampa-shot (?) oddity that plays less like an actual scare film than it does a spliced together collection of single-reel shorts and smokers. Legitimate scare films — think Reefer Madness, Mom and Dad, She Shoulda Said No! — generally have some sort of narrative about young lives spiralling out of control through sex, drugs, and the smut racket. This effort by a one-and-done director rejects that, instead feeling like a shotgun blast of every strain of 60s exploitation, veering wildly from burlesque stripteases to stalk-n-slash roughie sleaze, drag racing, cheapo gore hallucinations, and JD girl gang violence — all tenuously linked together through a stern voiceover. It’s all rendered in very un-psychedelic black and white and scored by library cues and free jazz, resulting in what could almost pass for a compulsively watchable 75 minute Something Weird Video mixtape. They don’t make ’em like this anymore, and I’m still not sure if they ever really did in the first place.
