Unlike other cautionary and in some cases hysterical PSA anti-drug films from back in the day, “Way Out” is actually *written and acted by recovering addicts. The difference is pointed in that there’s no demonization of the person(s) afflicted with addiction. Some might find faith in God being the answer to recovery archaic. Somehow I didn’t find it preachy. Seeing the cast members speak of their recovery during the credits filled me with hope. Their positivity was infectious. Though having worked in methadone clinics and seeing so many relapsed, I couldn’t help but to wonder how many of them stayed drug-free. It’s a vicious cycle and when you feel like God isn’t listening, it’s easy to go back your drug of choice. Recovery isn’t a one -size-fits-all process so if you can keep the faith more power to you.

Though it’s low budget, the fact that it was filmed on location in the Bronx is a huge selling point. Even better it centers on the Puerto Rican community, which adds cultural interest portraying a rarely represented people in film. Unlike 1961’s “West Side Story” the majority of actors are Puerto Rican and none of them were asked (TOLD) to darken their skin the way Rita Moreno was. So with that and the fact that they’re all recovering addicts, “Way Out” has an authenticity that makes it a film that should not be lost.

*It’s based on the play “The Addicts” by John Gimenez. It’s directed by none other than Irvin S. Yeaworth, Jr, who brought us the original “The Blob”.
